Pottery Barn Kids Lighting

When I was in Nashville over the weekend, I commented on how much I loved my friend's light fixture in her daughter's room.  She replied that it was from Pottery Barn Kids!  I don't know why, but I've never really given Pottery Barn Kids much thought!  I certainly love their seasonal stuff for kids (Virginia's Easter basket for example!) but most of the time their bedding has seemed so girly and their stuff generally is kind of expensive.  I was browsing their lighting when I got home and I was pretty impressed!

ONE | Courtland Sconce - it's hard to beat a $64 sconce that's hardwired to the wall!  We used Pottery Barn sconces in Heath's bedroom a while back and they look really nice.  I think if you changed the shade to a pretty pleated option in color, they would look really high end.

TWO | Pagoda Pendant - the most expensive at $299, but my favorite!  this would look perfect just about anywhere - a kitchen, bathroom with high ceilings, kids room, etc.  I have a fixture on order for my bedroom, but if it doesn't work out I'm going to try this out.  I love the finish on this, but it would also look really cool painted a bright color.

THREE | Dahlia Chandelier - this is the fixture that caught my eye at my friend's house!  In person it's more natural and less white.  I've seen a few versions of this fixture a handful of places, but the quality on this seems really nice.  (Nothing like the original, but there's about a $3,000 price difference!)

FOUR | Liam Glass Pendant - I love a little bit of black in almost every room - I always think it helps!  I like this pendant with it's black accent, and I also like how it has a less feminine feel than the rest.

My go to sources for lighting are typically West Elm, Shades of Light, local boutiques and most recently One Forty Three.  Where else am I missing that has a good selection?

Bits of the Bedroom

A few friends have been sweet and have asked to see a few pictures of our bedroom updates.  (Nice of them to pretend they care!!)  I snapped a few iphone pics and have shared them below if you're interested.  These pictures are nothing special, but I think the room has come a long way.  We still need pillows for the bed and a light fixture, and I plan to check those off next week!

I'm loving everything so far.  This face lift has made the biggest difference - I love hanging out here in the evening before bed.  We've painted, installed new bamboo blinds, and installed the curtains.  We found a dresser and little bamboo side tables at an antique shop, and we grabbed the little tufted benches to go below the windows from Target.  Few more things to go, but we're getting there!

See our (dreaded!) before shots here, and our original inspiration here!

Lonny Love

I feel like every now and then (more often than in most print magazines) Lonny Magazine features a home tour that I just love!  There are so many things about this Chicago apartment designed by Summer Thornton that are really so good.  Some of my favorites - that painted navy fireplace (totally want to copy this!), that built in dining nook, those Chippendale dining chairs and that kitchen!!  Those black shelves and that French blue stove - I'm really obsessed!

Pillow Talk

I've just about "finished" our master bedroom redo, and I'm really happy with how everything has turned out so far.  Only two little details that I still need to check off - an accent pillow for the bed, and a ceiling light fixture.  (I'll take some pictures soon to share the progress!)  I have of course been over analyzing the pillow for our bed trying to figure out what I like.  I've gathered lots of different looks below, and I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have an opinion.

To paint a visual picture, we now have a king bed!  (Oh my gosh, I never knew how much I needed a king bed in my life until we got one!)  I like really simple bedding, and for my own home I don't love tons of pillows.  Just sharing that in case it sways your vote!  Our bedding is simple white, and our drapes are in the fabric shown here.  I'd like to have a pillow made in the same fabric.

1 |  My original plan was to go with one large lumbar pillow - something that will make a clear, simple visual statement, and something large enough to show off the fabric.

2 | Two small bolsters in front of shams may be my all time favorite look, but I wonder if small bolsters would look too small on the king bed.  I also wonder if you could really see the pretty fabric on bolsters this small.

3 | Two accent pillows with pattern behind shams is also a beautiful look.  I probably won't go this direction because I think two pillows are more expensive than one (and require more fabric!) but I still would love to do something like this in a guest room sometime.

4 | This image with three accent pillows had me thinking - am I supposed to use two shams or three on a king bed?  I like a simple look with two, but J.D. thinks it looks bare and is pushing for three.

5 | I also really love this look with one large bolster.  It seems a little more formal than the top lumbar pillow, but I can't decide if it seems too formal??

6 | Last but not least (because I'm pretty much obsessed with this entire room), I love this look with two simple lumbar pillows and one pretty accent pillow.  It seems sweet and simple at the same time.

So what do you guys think?  I think my vote is for look 1, 5 and 6, but it's really hard because they're all beautiful.  Do you love lots of pillows, or just one or two?  I owe my seamstress an answer this week! :)

Lamp Love | Blue Marble

Guys if I had a spare spot in my house that needed a pair of lamps, I would snatch these lamps up in one second!  Seriously, these are so good - and the price is really pretty reasonable for a pair!  I think beautiful lamps are so expensive.  (Lamps and pillows - always so pricey!)  I've long loved the look of these marbled lamps, but of course could never spring for the real thing.  When I came across this option from Home Decorators Collection, I couldn't believe it!

These Lillian Table lamps are also available in a few other colors - I think the orange and brown are also beautiful.   If you love blue (like me!) here are a few other similar blue options: The Lillian from Home Decorators Collection (the budget option), Zinc's Color Swirl, Bunny Williams (beautiful but super pricey) Brushtroke lamp, Design Darling's Brushstroke lamp, and of course the mac daddy, most beautiful Christoper Spitzmiller Delft Blue Marble Lamps for any millionaire readers out there. :)

What's On Your....Bookshelf

This month, for the "What's On Your" series we're showing off bookcases.  I certainly don't think I really know what I'm doing when it comes to decorating bookcases, but they're one of my favorite parts of my home and most peoples homes I visit.  I think they can be so hard to decorate!  I truthfully unpacked boxes when we first moved in and put most of this stuff in place as I unpacked, and other then a few tweaks here or there, I haven't given much though or attention to these areas since!

A few (really dark!) photos of one of my bookcases below....

We have built in bookcases on either side of our fireplace.  They're really not anything fancy, but once they're filled you don't really notice that.  I tend to like bookcases filled with tons of books, plus a few personal items tucked in.  (I know some prefer bookcases with more decorative pieces, less books - personal preferences!)  My book club makes fun of me for only buying hardbacks, but I dream of having a "library" in my forever home so I'm adding books once month at a time!  Rooms lined in bookcases to me are the absolutely coziest!

A wedding picture, a few pictures of Virginia, miscellaneous vases my mom has gifted me through the years and a piece of art by my cousin's wife also are tucked in.

Be sure to visit these other bloggers sharing their personal bookcases today too.....

I've considered painting the back of my bookcases a fun color, but my house has a lot going on in it so I've stopped! :)  What do you think of this idea though?  Kind of fun!  Thanks for having us participate Sarah - it's always so much fun!

A Fresh Gallery Wall

Do you guys have a photo wall in your home?  Do you love them/hate them?  We have a little wall in our guest room that's slowly filling up with family photos and it's one of my favorite parts of our home - I love walking past it filled with memories.  I've had the above photo of India Hick's dining room saved forever.  I love how the photos make a formal dining room seem much less stuffy, but I also think I like how all of the photos are propped along a rail instead of formally hung.

Are you into the idea of gallery walls along a picture ledge instead of formally hung?  In some ways it makes things feel much more casual, more collected and much easier to switch photos around.  I think for me personally I prefer how the top photo includes frames that are in different shades/colors.  The all black and all white frames feel a little too clean (cold) to me, but those may be what others prefer!  Regardless I'm thinking this is a fun, inexpensive solution to switch up the plain ole' gallery wall!

What's on your... Coffee Table

Next up in our series "What's on your... " we're sharing what's on our coffee table.  I will admit my coffee table is not very glamorous but it works for us right now so here you have it.  Most days it has a few books, maybe a to do list and a cup of coffee or glass of wine.  I've included a few details below if you're interested.

On the table:

Underneath:
Italy (our wedding guest book!)

The only flowers I always have around are Trader Joe's orchids. I can keep them alive for a good amount of time (with a few ice cubes a week) and they're so cheap for the color they add to a room. I love them! I would love to be one of those people that always has fresh blooms but it just doesn't happen aound here.

The table itself is a hand me down from my parents. I've been using it for years and can't even remember where it came from exactly. Years ago it had a very light natural wood color that didn't really go with my other furniture so my parents helped me refinish it a little darker so it blends more with my other furniture.

Last and certainly not least my favorite wine glass. I searched forever for these glasses after our honeymoon in Italy. Everywhere over there serves wine in small table glasses and I love how approachable and casual it is. Takes me right back with every sip!

Yay or Nay | Contempory Light Fixtures

I am so close to being "done" with our bedroom renovation!  Seriously so close.  All of the major stuff has been checked off - bedding, drapes, dresser, lamps, etc.  The one major things that still needs to be decided is a ceiling light fixture.  I'm really considering doing something more contemporary here.  The rest of the room is looking pretty close to my original inspiration - very traditional with a bit of a feminine feel.  I've rounded up a few inspiration images below of traditional interiors using contemporary lighting to help decide....

So what do you guys think about contemporary light fixtures, especially in interiors with traditional interiors - Yay or Nay?  J.D.'s on the fence so I decided to round up images to convince him (and myself) and I was really surprised by how tricky it was to find examples.  There are plenty of beautiful contemporary light fixtures out there, but most of them are in gorgeous contemporary interiors.  And for me personally, I lean towards more of a traditional interiors.  So what do you think - would you do contemporary lighting in a room with a traditional feel?  If we're thinking this is a good direction, I'll round up a few favorite sources for contemporary fixtures.

Hugo Guinness | Need your vote!

I've been a HUGE fan of Hugo Guinness' work for a long time!  My grandparents gifted Heath a piece of his work last year, and they gave me and J.D. a piece for Christmas this year.  (Thank you Tata & Granddaddy!!)  I truly LOVE it!  So, I'm finally getting around to having it framed, and I'd love your input.  I really want to get the frame on this piece right.  I feel like a frame can really make a huge difference in a piece.  I've put together some inspiration below showing beautifully framed Hugo Guinness pieces, and I've included my three framing options for you to vote - Option 1 | a Chunky Gold, Option 2 | an Antiqued Black & Gold, and Option 3 | a Chunky Black with Gold Details.  Take a look and let me know what you think....

If you don't mind, let me know your input.  I'd really love to hear.  And in case you're curious, here's the roundup of the image sources:  Top collage is via Jessica Comingnore, and the middle image is of Hugo Guinness' home.  I'm pretty obsessed with that mantel too!  Third image is of Kate Spade's beautiful collection - I think this is where my obsession began!  And the last image is of a collection in Real Simple.  I love his work in every single one of these settings.  A while ago we did a feature on "Starting a Collection" showing off pieces you would use forever and this certainly fits the bill.  I love his work because it works so well with traditional interiors and in contemporary spaces.  And the black and white color palette seem to work with any other colors in a space.  His work is timeless and classic, but really quirky at the same time.  Let me know your vote!

Photo Follow Up

MK mentioned that she finally got her photos organized in February (sadly loosing 1,000+ of them with her old iPhone went a long way in getting this job done) so we wanted to share a few things that stuck out in getting this done.

I read somewhere, do not start by going back through all of your old photos and trying to get them organized.  It's too difficult of a task!  Develop a new system and then implement that system moving forward.  At least all of your new photos will be organized moving forward, and you can go back bit by bit when you have time to work on old photos.

This concept resonated with me big time. I've actually been doing really well with my photo process since we started blogging. I upload my photos regularly by event and even started backing up our computers. So mostly this concept just made me feel a little less guilty about the 1000+ photos I have stored on our external hard drive that aren't printed or even in a book in our home. It's so sad but I didn't have a routine at the time so I just never got around to it. I'm hoping I'll get to it fairly soon with this new organization though.

If you're curious, here's the system we landed on:

1 - Use an IPhone reminder for one night a month to upload miscellaneous iPhone and camera photos
2 - Unload vacation/event photos within a week
3 - Save them to an online photos site(flickr etc)
4 - Organize into events and labeled folders with dates
5 - Go through quickly to delete duplicates and out of focus shots
6 - Organize photos into preferred sequential order for photo book
7 - Prepare photo book!
8 - Print and frame photos!!

We know this isn't breaking news but this process has really helped us get more organized so we though we'd share. Any other tips or tricks we should know?

Next on the list - photo books and framing!

Rug Round Up

A few weeks (maybe months!) back when Heath and I shared a peek at the rugs we bought in Istanbul, a reader commented that they would love to see ideas on where to source similar vintage rugs.  I've put together a round up of my favorite sources for vintage rugs, and I'll share a few thoughts below.

Buy the smallest - but the best!  So this little "rule" can be applied to many things.  I was at a frame shop over a year ago, and the lady told me something that's stuck with me.  This lady does beautiful framing out of her home.  I was in her home admiring her many personal portraits.  At the time Virginia was nestled in her little car seat carrier next to me and I started dreaming about having a portrait of Virginia.  I shyly asked her what an average portrait may cost.  She said, when it comes to portraits, you set your budget, and then you find the best artist you can find and buy the size that is in your budget.  She said you'll love a stunning 8" x 10" perfect portrait more any day over a larger just so-so portrait.  So true!  Smaller can be better.  I think the same can be said for rugs and art in general.  Buy the best looking vintage rug you can, even if it's small.  You can layer it over another sisal rug, you can use them in more places when they're small, plus the color of most vintage rugs goes along way.  Many that are the best quality have the most wear because of how old they are.

Buy truly vintage - if at all possible!  "Vintage"/"Antique" rugs are very popular right now, they're very "in" and I get that.  I love them too so I can see why!  But, I think often if you buy a brand new rug that is meant to look old (especially on the internet) the quality can be iffy in person.  Luckily more and more online boutiques are carrying good options, and also estate sales and thrift stores are other good sources.

My favorites online sources are Furbish Studio, Amber Interiors (she has so many right now!), Sara Kate Studios & One Kings Lane.  If you do land on a new rug, Lulu and Georgia has beautiful options.  Rugs are a big $$ purchase, so I go with an inexpensive sisal just about everywhere until I can save for the real thing!  Any other sources that we should add to the list?

March's Project | Frame

I'm loving these monthly projects, but truthfully March's project really is just an add-on to buy me a little more time to finish up my February project.  (February was a short month so it's hard to get stuff done!!  Plus, framing pictures kind of goes along with organizing them, right?!)  So good news is my photos are fairly organized, bad news is I didn't get them put in photo books like I'd like.  So that's the plan for March.  Also, March is the month I'm planning a big Framing Project.  I have lots of random things that need to be framed around the house, small and large art that is currently just propped in random spots.  They finally need a proper frame and to be hung, plus I have lots of family photos that need to be framed and added to the gallery wall.  (There isn't a picture of Virginia's first birthday, one of my all time favorites days, in sight in this house!)  So, photo books plus framing is on schedule for March!  Charlotte folks, do you have a favorite frame resource?  Everyone else, do you have online frame resources that you love?  Heath and I are going to be putting together a round up and we'd love to include any of your ideas!

What's On Your....Kitchen Counter

Next up in the series "What's On Your..." we're sharing what's on our kitchen counters.   Most weeks the only thing that is only our kitchen counter is a big bowl of fruit, lots of our favorite olive oil, a bottle of wine and dish soap.  (As a matter of fact, once we were enjoying dinner with friends at our kitchen table, and our friend said, "I have a question, do you guys really go through that much fruit and olive oil?!"  We're obsessed!  I can tell looking at these pics below I've got some work with accessorizing to do!  Things are looking a little bare, and I know I'd like to at least add a few plants.  A few pics of what's on my kitchen counter below, and also I shared more pictures of my kitchen renovation here if you're interested!

The one pic above left is really difficult to see, but it's one of my favorite parts.  This area isn't really my kitchen counter - it's really a butler's pantry but I still love it.  I keep a growing collection of glass tumblers here, perfectly in pretty sight and reach for J.D. to make me an evening cocktail!

Thanks Sarah for organizing!  I can't wait to see everyone's.  I know I need to add some accessories to give the kitchen a little more warmth so I'm hoping to steal a few ideas.  I went to a friends recently and her kitchen had a few BIG potted plants that I loved, so I know that's one thing I'd like to add eventually!

Interiors Details | Decorating with Color

This weekend as we were setting up for the LaRoque mini trunk show we got to talking about interiors.  Annabelle was commenting on the color of MK's dining room (you can see it here) and how institutional her home was going to feel when she returned home.  (Although we know her home is probably gorgeous!)  She explained she has all white walls, trim and doors and after seeing MK's home with a green dining room, grass clothed guest room and the occasional black door that her home felt too white.  I knew exactly what she meant but it's such a tricky in between don't you think?

I've never seen Annabelle's home but I know it's gorgeous based on her designs and taste I've seen so far.  But it got me thinking about how I use color in my home, or really for me there's a serious lack of color! Right now it feels right though, it feels comfortable for now.

How much color do you use in your home? I'm not really into white so my home is more neutrals at this point but I'm so curious what I'll do with a future home that I spend a little more time/money decorating!

Master Bedroom Overhaul Part II

Heath mentioned that we made progress on our master bedroom renovation this past weekend and we really did!  We had the bedroom painted that pale blue I had been admiring, and I got just about every other major component for the room on order.  I found this fabric to use for drapes and pretty much used it as my starting point for everything else.

I always love crisp white bedding in bedrooms, and Horchow is always running good sales.  My mom bookmarked this bedding for me months ago, and I loved the feminine scallop.  For lamps I'm using sconce lights, and I'm hoping to switch out the shades to something pleated.  I love how a pleated shade looks all lit up, and I'm hoping that these sconce lamps are just what I need to get back on track with lots of bedtime reading.  (I'm blaming my terrible bedroom for my lack of book club participation lately.)

I'm a little more torn on the rug direction.  J.D. would like something more "plush" (pretty much non-sisal) but wool carpets can get pricey really quickly, plus I think I'm liking the warmth that a neutral sisal gives colorwise.  This option from Dash & Albert is always a favorite, but it's popular and we've already used it in Virginia's room in blue.

So!  Lots of fun stuff and we're moving right along.  I've never "decorated" a room like this.  I'm always slow and methodical, but for some reason I'm just quickly going with my gut and moving along with this project.  (J.D.'s probably cringing imagining me changing my mind later! :)  Not pictured is a new/old wood chest that we desperately need so J.D. can quit using the Rubbermaid.  I think that it will visually be a big help too - the wood will add warmth.

So, next to add is one more lamp, a few new picture frames and accessories, possibly art, and if anyone has rug suggestions or a vote I'd love to hear!

Kitchen Reveal

Remember way back (almost one and half years ago!!) when we were renovating our kitchen?!  We'll the kitchen is most definitely renovated, and it has been for some time, but I was waiting to photograph it until it was "finished."  And then I realized, I don't know when that will happen.  It's still missing art, lamps, accessories, etc., but the bones of it are renovated, and we decided it would be fun to share!

Our inspiration and before pictures are right here, and we shared lots of progress shots here.  Even though these after pics aren't perfect, they're much more impressive after seeing what we started with!  Truthfully, I didn't style these pictures at all - like I wanted to!  I asked J.D. to grab flowers from the grocery store so that I could try to spruce things up before taking these pictures, and he came home empty handed.  He said only neon flowers were available, and he decided to pass!

Okay, picture overload below if you're interested....

We are loving the kitchen!  It's completely transformed the house, so much so that I think we'll stay here far longer than we originally planned.  It's changed the way we live in the house.  J.D. usually comes down here super early and works before Virginia gets up, and I spend lots of time in here cooking.  (We never hung out in here before.)  We eat breakfast together most mornings in the kitchen, and the little sitting area is a combo of Virginia's playroom/where J.D. enjoys a drink while I cook.  We added no square footage, but the house feels bigger, and the addition of the French doors have made us use the back yard so much more.

I'm still on the lookout for a piece of art to use above the loveseat, and a better lamp in that area.  If anyone has any questions, please let me know!  We have sources for everything written down, but it's been a little while so they aren't on the top of my head! :)
